The First Bahamas Down Syndrome Association was established in the late 1980's by Mrs. Pamela Forbes Merchant, Mrs. Ida Poitier Turnquest and Mrs. Betty Taylor. This group of parents formed this association as a support group and met in one of the hotels here in Nassau. After several years the association died out.

The Bahamas Down syndrome Association was re-established in November 2005. We were brought together by Ms. Cynthia Stanko from the Infant Stimulation program. She thought there were too many families here in Nassau with Down syndrome children that needed a support group and some guidance. We all met for the first time at the Queens College campus and shared our stories with one another.
